CECILIA DREYMÜLLER & ANDRÉS BARBA
FANTASTIC BEASTARY
Bizkaia Aretoa · Sala Mitxelena
The biting ape from ‘Report for an Academy’, the neurotic mole from ‘The Burrow’ or the sceptical mice from ‘Josephine the Singer’ are just some of the speaking and thinking animals which, along with the famous insect from ‘The Metamorphosis’ at the head of them all, form a procession of odd zoological creatures that feature in several of Kafka’s stories. In the form of real beasts or invented creatures – such as the lamb and cat hybrid of ‘A Crossbreed’- the number of animals in Kafka’s stories is so staggering that it goes beyond anecdote. Cecilia Dreymüler and Andrés Barba will review Kafka’s bestiary, extending the catalogue to the fantastic zoology of world literature. Works such as ‘The Book of Imaginary Beings’, which under the influence of Kafka, was conceived by Jorge Luis Borges in conjunction with Margarita Guerrero.
