KAFKA'S HUMOUR
Bizkaia Aretoa · Sala Mitxelena
Kafka is often wrongly accused of dark and anguished visions of existence, a misunderstanding that ignores the importance of humour in his literature. His literature is rife with scenes of physical comedy, extravagant characters, black humour and verbal exaggeration. On a personal level, Kafka was known to have a great sense of humour. There are numerous examples and anecdotes in this regard, and two great connoisseurs of his work can give an account of them: Ignacio Echevarría, who has been in charge of Kafka’s ‘Complete Works’ published by Galaxia Gutenberg for twenty-five years, and Manuel Vilas, who considers Kafka his most significant literary influence. This influence can be seen in many of his works. For instance, in the recently published novel by Gran Vilas, a hyperbole fan, entitled ‘El mejor libro del mundo’ (Destino).
