MILENA DE PRAGA

Sala BBK

Milena de Praga

We owe it to Kafka’s ‘Letters to Milena’, for making his addressee known, a unique woman the author admired for her vitality. Translator of some of Kafka’s works into Czech and the woman who understood him most intimately, Milena Jesenská (1896-1944) was, above all, a prominent journalist, a member of Vienna’s intellectual elite and of the resistance groups against the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia. She eventually died in Ravensbrück, a place where she displayed courageous gestures of humanity. Some of them are related to the music we will listen to during the session: a selection of Jesenská’s favourite pieces chosen and performed on the piano by Lola Barroso. Monika Zgustova, journalist and Czech translator like the main character of her biography ‘Milena de Praga’, will bring us closer to the life of this fascinating figure, in an encounter with Carolina Ontivero at the baton.
