ZADIE SMITH
In conversation with ALOMA RODRÍGUEZ
Sala BBK
Since her acclaimed debut novel ‘White Teeth’, Zadie Smith’s narrative moves to the rhythm of jazz in the same north-west London neighbourhood where she grew up. A territory populated by multicultural personalities —she herself is of Jamaican origin— where current issues related to family or social differences are tackled with a penetrating gaze and a playful spirit. Smith does not neglect present-day concerns even when she takes her usual setting back two centuries. She does so in her latest novel, ‘The Fraud’, recently published by Salamandra, a catalogue that includes several titles by the author, including ‘Changing My Mind’, a brilliant essay that also celebrates Kafka. There are plenty of reasons for this: Smith is a long-awaited guest of the festival, and we finally get to welcome her this 2024. The writer Aloma Rodríguez will be her swing partner.
