His first feature film was Habla, mudita, which won the Critics&#8217; Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Among his best-known films are \u2018Camada negra\u2019\u00a0Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Festival), \u2018Maravillas\u2019, \u2018Demonios en el jard\u00edn\u2019\u00a0(Critics&#8217; Prize at the Moscow Festival and Donatello Award from the Italian Film Academy) and \u2018La mitad del cielo\u2019\u00a0(Golden Shell at the San Sebastian Festival). He was awarded the National Film Award and the Film Academy Gold Medal. After his last film, \u2018Todos estamos invitados\u2019\u00a0(Grand Jury Prize at the Malaga Festival), he announced his retirement from filmmaking.\u00a0His first novel, \u2018La vida antes de marzo\u2019, was awarded the Herralde Prize.
