He spent his childhood and adolescence in Le\u00f3n and studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid. He began his literary career with poetry, but his work stands out for his narrative and, above all, his short stories, a genre for which he is one of the leading representatives in Spain. His stories, generally of fantasy content, are collected in the volume \u2018Historias del otro lugar\u2018 (Alfaguara, 2010). As a novelist, he was awarded the Premio de la Cr\u00edtica in 1985 with \u2018La orilla oscura\u2019 (Alfaguara). He has also received the National Youth Literature Prize, the NH Prize and the Salamb\u00f3 Prize. Among others, he has also published the novels \u2018Las visiones de Lucrecia\u2019 (1996, Miguel DelibesPrize); \u2018El heredero\u2019 (2003, Ram\u00f3n G\u00f3mez de la Serna Prize); \u2018El lugar sin culpa\u2019 (2007, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester Prize); \u2018El r\u00edo del Ed\u00e9n\u2019 (2012, National Narrative Prize); and most recently, \u2018La novela posible\u2018 (2022). He was awarded the Premio Nacional de las Letras Espa\u00f1olas in 2021.
