(Madrid, 1955) is a film director, screenwriter, producer and writer. He made his film debut with Ópera prima and has directed films including El año de las luces, Belle Époque —winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film—, La niña de tus ojos, Calle 54, Chico & Rita and Memories of My Father. He has also worked as a music producer and published books on film and music. In 2015, he received the Spanish National Cinematography Award and the BBK Ja! Award.
