Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón

(Torrelavega, Cantabria, 1942) He entered the Madrid Film School in 1962 while studying Philosophy and Arts. His first feature film was Habla, mudita, which won the Critics’ Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Among his best-known films are ‘Camada negra’ Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Festival), ‘Maravillas’, ‘Demonios en el jardín’ (Critics’ Prize at the Moscow Festival and Donatello Award from the Italian Film Academy) and ‘La mitad del cielo’ (Golden Shell at the San Sebastian Festival). He was awarded the National Film Award and the Film Academy Gold Medal. After his last film, ‘Todos estamos invitados’ (Grand Jury Prize at the Malaga Festival), he announced his retirement from filmmaking. His first novel, ‘La vida antes de marzo’, was awarded the Herralde Prize. Again under Anagrama, he has published the novels ‘Gloria mía’, ‘El ojo del cielo’, ‘Rodaje’, the book about cinema ‘A los actores’, the short stories volume ‘Oriente’ and the last one, the memoirs ‘Vida y maravillas’ (2024).
